Don't call me a hero

(Steve Pichan - recording artist)
2011-05-17
Steve Pichan - singer / songwriter / recording artist
I've met many decorated soldiers that have seen the horrors of war. Though they are heroes in their own right, they shy away from the title. To them, the real heroes are those who sacrificed the ultimate; life itself.
This song is dedicated to the humble heroes who are still with us today and have been blessed to return.
Don’t call me a hero
Words and music; Steve Pichan
February 2011

Put a ribbon on me
Displayed it on my chest
Heard them call me hero
But I confess
Watched a soldier running
Saw them cut him down
They laid the real hero
In sacred ground

Don’t call me a hero
I’m not deserving of that
A real hero is another
Who never made it back
Don’t see myself a hero
I only gave a part of me
Real heroes give it all up
So you and I are free
So you and I are free

Earned a heart of purple
For what I did not see
Mines below were hidden
For weary feet
Some returned with stories
And wounds for all to see
And some returned in silence
Unending peace

Don’t call me a hero
The ones deserving of that
Gave it all up for this freedom
They’re never turnin’ back
Don’t see myself a hero
I gave but just a part of me
Real heroes give it all up
So you and I are free
So you and I are free
