Steve Pichan - music, lyrics
This song was written specifically for the documenatary "Our Vietnam Generation" produced and directed by Keith Famie. The song reflects the experience of Vietnam Soldiers upon returning to the U.S. and being met with the harsh reality of war protestors that hurled insults at them. Keith's documentary is intended to provide a proper "Welcome Home" for those who served there but were never honored for their sacrifice.
Lookin' out from a window
California shoreline
Are they wavin' a flag
"Welcome Home"?
Some in the sand have drawn a straight line
They dare me to cross
The don't see what I've seen
Haven't been where I've been
Cannot feel what I feel
I looked, they looked away
Watched a young man running
For his life, forgotten
Hot at as hell, well it's not them
Who with their blood have paid
Made it through Khe Sanh
Gunner beside me
Mind and my sould didn't make it that day
Survived Tet Offensive
Not all my body
Didn't come back the same
The don't see what I've seen
Haven't been where I've been
Cannot feel what I feel
I looked, they looked away
I was a young man running
For his life forgotten
Hot at as hell, well it's not them
Who with their blood have paid
Heard that the wall
was in need of a washin'
Tears from their eyes
will do just the same
Read all the names
time to forgive them
For the ones that remain
Didn't know what I've known
Couldn't go where I've gone
Sometimes I feel what they feel
I look, they look my way
On the Wall see the young
Forever he's remembered,
The image never leaving
Of sacrifice they made
A younger soldier's homecoming
From his war, we greet them
Gather there to thank him
